Description

This workshop explores alexithymia in neurodivergent individuals, particularly autistic girls, focusing on the challenges of identifying and expressing emotions. We discuss how alexithymia affects communication, emotional regulation, and interoception—the ability to recognise internal physical states. The session also addresses common misconceptions, including the belief that autistic people lack empathy, and highlights the “double empathy problem” in neurodivergent communication.

Key topics include supporting emotional literacy using visual tools, managing shutdowns and burnout, recognising “tangled tummy” sensations, and introducing alternative communication strategies. Parents will gain practical techniques for helping children understand and express their needs while using neuroaffirmative language and approaches.
