Neurodiversity and Positive Identities

Student Workshop for Year 5 and 6 (Primary School)

Duration: 1 hour

Training is virtual unless otherwise arranged.

Overview

Understanding neurodiversity is about much more than recognising differences – it is about valuing them. Every child experiences the world in their own unique way, and developing this understanding early helps to create inclusive, respectful school communities.

This engaging, interactive workshop introduces pupils to the concept of neurodiversity as difference, not deficit. Through relatable examples and creative activities, students explore how we all think, learn, and experience the world differently.

Using the powerful comparison of biodiversity, pupils will discover why diversity is essential—not just in nature, but in human thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.

Delivered by a trainer with lived experience, this session provides an authentic and positive perspective on neurodivergence, helping pupils to recognise strengths in themselves and others while building a sense of pride in who they are.

What pupils will learn

  • An understanding of neurodiversity and what it means

  • The differences between neurotypical and neurodivergent ways of thinking, communicating and experiencing the world.

  • Why diversity in thinking is valuable, using biodiversity as a comparison

  • That everyone’s needs can change, helping to build empathy and flexibility

  • The importance of using respectful, neuro-affirmative language

  • Why terms like “high-functioning” and “low-functioning” can be unhelpful

  • An introduction to different neurotypes and how they may affect learning and daily school life

  • The strengths associated with neurodivergence

  • How to identify their own strengths, with support from peers and adults

  • Ways to build confidence and self-understanding

  • How to feel proud of their identity, reducing the pressure to mask

  • The importance of celebrating differences and respecting others

Approach

This session is designed to be interactive, accessible, and age-appropriate, with a strong focus on participation and discussion. Activities encourage pupils to reflect, share ideas, and learn from one another in a supportive environment.

All pupils will be given a clear outline of what to expect, helping to reduce uncertainty and create a calm, positive learning experience.

Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, pupils will have a clearer understanding of neurodiversity, a greater appreciation of differences, and increased confidence in their own identity—alongside a shared understanding that difference is something to be celebrated.
